Course Overview:
This is a survey class
designed to give you in depth exposure to a wide range of literature and
writing styles. It is a full year class
that encompasses reading skills, analysis of literature, writing, and public
speaking skills.
Course Content/Goals:

Students will be able to write in various modes at CIM level or higher.
·
Students will be able to communicate verbally in front of an audience at
CIM level or higher.
·
Students will be able to read, interpret and evaluate literature and
other written forms at CIM level or higher.
·
Students will understand and participate in writing and reading as a
process, doing mental and practice activities at the beginning, middle and end
of the process.

this syllabus grants your student permission to watch all films this year,
unless otherwise noted.
Assessment:
• Grading Scale follows what is in the student
handbook.
• Grading Percentages:
Participation 5%
Daily Work 20%
Quizzes (unannounced, but you may use handwritten notes) 15%
Tests (announced, you may use handwritten notes) 15%
*Major Assignments (essays, speeches, projects) 35%
Final Exam 10%
* Because essays and speeches are for CIM
certification, you always have the option to redo them to improve your CIM
scores. You must revise them within one
week if you wish to improve your grade by a maximum of 10% if your original
score was a B or lower. You may revise
to improve CIM scores at any time.
• Late
Work: Anything turned in late is worth 50% credit. You will receive two certificates that will
allow you to turn in two assignments one day late. If you are absent on the day an assignment
is due, it is your responsibility to turn it in the day you return. If not, it will be considered late.
CIM Work Samples Available in this Class:
Writing: Imaginative, Persuasive, Narrative,
and Expository
Speaking: Informative, Persuasive, Unrehearsed
Attendance/Tardies:
• Tardies will be handled as per student
handbook.
• Late work due to absences: Ask for work as soon as you return to school. Quizzes and worksheets must be completed
within one calendar week of them
being assigned, except in the case of a prolonged absence and when arrangements
are made with the teacher.
• Unexcused absences: You lose the right to make up work for credit
if you have an unexcused absence.
Behavior Expectations:
Be respectful of people,
whether they are in the classroom or not.
Allow others to perform
their duties to the best of their ability.

listed on the master school class schedule.
This semester it is 3rd period. I
