Course Overview:

This is a survey class designed to give you exposure to a wide range of literature and writing styles.  It is a full year class that encompasses reading skills, analysis of literature, writing, and public speaking.

 

Course Content/Goals:

·        Students will be able to write in various modes at CIM level.

·        Students will be able to communicate verbally in front of an audience at CIM level.

·        Students will be able to read, interpret and evaluate literature and other written forms at CIM level.

·        Students will understand and participate in writing and reading as a process, doing mental and practice activities at the beginning, middle and end of the process.

·        Parents:  Please contact me if you have concerns about any materials listed above.  Some of these materials are mature in language and subject matter.  If you are uncomfortable with what we are studying, I have alternate material available.  Signing the syllabus will grant your child permission to watch all films unless you state otherwise.

 

Assessment:

  Grading Scale follows what is in the student handbook.

  Grading Percentages:

            Participation                                                                                                     5%

            Daily Work                                                                                                      20%

            Quizzes (unannounced, but you may use handwritten notes)                   15%

            Tests (announced, you may use handwritten notes)                                15%

            *Major Assignments (essays, speeches, projects)                                  35%

            Final Exam                                                                                                       10%

*  Because essays and speeches are for CIM certification, you always have the option to redo them to improve your CIM scores.  You must revise them within one week if you wish to improve your grade.  You may revise to improve CIM scores at any time.

  Late Work:

Anything turned in late is worth 50% credit.  You will receive four certificates that will allow you to turn in four assignments one day late.    If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, it is your responsibility to turn it in when you return.  If you don't, it will be considered late.

 

CIM Work Samples Available in this Class:

Writing:            Imaginative, Persuasive, Narrative, and Expository

Speaking:         Informative, Persuasive, Unrehearsed

 

Attendance/Tardies:

  Tardies will be handled as per student handbook.

  Late work due to absences:  Ask for work as soon as you return to school.  Quizzes and worksheets must be completed within one week of them being assigned, except in the case of a prolonged absence and then arrangements must be made. 

  Unexcused absences:  You lose the right to make up work for credit if you have an unexcused absence.

 

Behavior Expectations:

Be respectful of others, whether they are in the room or not.  You behavior, speech, and attitude should allow others to perform their duties to the best of their ability.

 

Course Competencies for Class:

We will cover the Common Curriculum Goals at the 10th grade benchmark in reading, literature, writing, and speaking.  For a more detailed description, please contact me.

 

Career Related Learning Standards:

We will deal with Personal Management, Problem Solving, Communication, Team Work, and Career Development as described in the Oregon Career-Related Learning Standards.

 

Office Hours:

My preparation period is listed on the master school class schedule.  This semester it is 3rd period.  I am also available from 7:30-8:00 and from 3:00-3:30.  If you cannot find me in the classroom, please have the office page me.
