Course Description:

 This course explores different manufacturing processes in industry. Three of these processes the students will explore will be, sheet metal, machine tool operations, and welding. One project in each process will be made by each student.

Students will learn skills in shop safety, tool identification, basic layout, hand tool skills, basic manufacturing skills, and interpersonal work skills.

 

This course is a prerequisite for the advanced manufacturing class and is required for a manufacturing certificate. ( See the back page of this handout or Mr. Sunderman for more details of this certificate).

 

Required Activities:

·              Attend class regularly and consistently participate in class activities.

·              Read the text and reference materials as directed.

·              follow all class rules as stated in the class rule section.

·              follow all shop rules as stated in the shop rule section.

·              Each student will be responsible for a specific area to clean-up each day. This area must be cleaned before the student is excused at the end of the period.

·              Continue development of interpersonal communication skills( Safety conscious, good house keeping, work well with others, following directions, reliability, build self confidence, perseverance ability, and leadership skills).

·              Skills USA (VICA): Skills USA is a part of the manufacturing program. This program is available to all students and all students are encouraged to participate in the club activities.

·              Students will need to provide a three ring folder for all handouts to be stored in.

Costs:

·              There is a $25 lab fee for the 36 week class. $3.00 dollars of the fee is for         safety supplies. the rest of the lab fee is for the assigned projects. $11

         dollars per semester. the lab fee covers only the first pair of Safety glasses.

·              (any replacement pairs of safety glasses after the first pair is not covered by the

          lab fee and will be the students responsibility to purchase).

·              Any projects above the assigned projects by the instructor will not be covered by the lab fee and will need to be paid for by material cards purchased by the student before the project can be started.

         (material cards are purchased at the main office).

·              Extra clothing such as coveralls, work shirts, shoes, etc. for protection should be

         brought to school for working in the lab are the students responsibility. ( Shorts

         or open toed shoes are considered unsafe to wear in the lab and students will not

         be allowed to work if not safely dressed).

Grading:

Written assignments: 20%

I.P.C. skills ( Inter personal Communication or work Habits): 35%

       ( Work habits such as attendance, tardies, behavior in class, on task efficiency,

       cooperation, following instructions, proper use of equipment and tools, following

       lab rules, etc.). Each class period will have a possible 2 points to earn.

Projects: 25%

Tests and quizzes: 10%

Final exam: 10%

        

Notes:

Electronic devices and hats: no electronic devices or hats are allowed to be out for

         any reason. they will be taken and sent to the front office.

Tardies: Any student not in the class room when the bell rings will be considered

         tardy. Refer to student for other details for tardies.

Absence Voucher: An absence voucher will be presented to the teacher by the

         second class following any absence, except for a school function.

Late Assignments: Assignments turned in late will receive a 25% deduction. Any  

        Assignments turned in one week late will receive a 50% deduction.

Safety and clean-up check marks: Students will receive a check mark for a flagrant

        or repetitive safety violation, and a check mark for failing to do their required

        clean up assignment. each check mark will be one percent deduction on the final

        grade for that semester. A check mark may be made up by ½ hour clean up in

        the shop.

Work Habits: Good work habits are very important in industry. Students have the

        opportunity to earn 2 points each day for good work habits in the classroom and

        lab. Activities that will cause points from being earned are: Tardies, off task,

        safety violations, not following directions, improper use of equipment, miss

        behavior, disrupting the class, inappropriate dress, and absences. An unexcused

        absence will result in no points for that day and an excused absence will result in

        one point .

Class and Lab Rules:  Rules for the class and  lab will accompany the

        course syllabus. Please review and sign.

Films shown: tech films on tools used, fabrication processes, and safety

Office Hours:  8:00-3:30 each day. My preparation period will be listed on the

        master school schedule.

 

2+2 College credits

Various college welding and manufacturing course credits may be earned by students at Stayton High School by completing certain competencies under the 2+2 programs that Lynn Benton Community College and Chemeketa Community College have. These competencies can be usually completed during classes students are taking at Stayton High School. These credits can be earned at a very low cost to the students and the students are strongly encouraged to earn these credits.

 

 

 

 

Manufacturing Technology Certificate

Students that have successfully completed specific courses and competencies will receive a technical manufacturing certificate. Completion of the required courses will give the student a basic apprenticeship entry level  of knowledge and skills.

Students interested in completing the program and earning a manufacturing technology certificate should start completing the courses as soon as possible. Juniors and seniors beginning a certificate program usually encounter great difficulties in scheduling all of the required classes. Any student interested should contact the manufacturing instructor for more details. The course requirements are listed below.

 

Manufacturing Certificate Requirements:

These Classes must be completed successfully with a minimum or 2.00 accumulative GPA to earn a Manufacturing Technology Certificate.

 

·              Manufacturing I (36 weeks)

·              Fabrication I (36 weeks)

·              Drafting I (1st 18 weeks)

·              Manufacturing Lab Assistant (18 weeks)

·              Adv. manufacturing Tig & mill (36 weeks)

·              Adv. Manufacturing Mig & Lathe (36 weeks)

      Plus 1 credit from any two:

 

·              Wood 1

·              Drafting ( 2nd 18 weeks)

·              computer refurbishing ( STRUT)

·              Chemistry (applied)

·              Physics (applied)

Class Room and Lab Rules

 

1. Students and the teacher will respect each other.

2. Students will help each other when they can.

3. Students will come to class prepared to participate.

4. No food or gum in the class room or lab.

5. No head sets in the class room or lab.

6. Safety glasses will be worn in the lab at all times.

7. No running is allowed in the lab.

8. No practical jokes are allowed in the lab.

9. No pushing in the lab.

10. Leave any equipment you have not been trained on alone.

11. Serious safety infractions or disregard for safety rules may result in a students being

      removed from the class.

12. All projects must first be cleared with Mr. Sunderman before the student may start.

      Any project started without permission will be stopped and will not be made.

13. Students need to check with Mr. Sunderman before going to the rest room.

14. Students are not allowed to leave the technology building without Mr. Sunderman’s

      specific permission. Any student that leaves the technology building will be

      considered truant.

15. The text books for this class are many years old. We have the books in book covers to

      help protect them. Any mistreatment of the books cannot be  allowed. We need to

      make these books last a long time.

16. The rules in the student hand book will be followed.

17. Students are not allowed into the technology lab with out specific permission.

      Students entering the technology lab without permission will receive a 90 minute

     detention on the first offence. The second offence will be considered insubordination.
