Course Overview:
This is a
survey class designed to give you exposure to a wide range of literature and
writing styles. It is a full year class
that encompasses reading skills, analysis of literature, writing, and public
speaking.
Course Content/Goals:

Students will work on developing writing skills to a
proficient level.
·
Students will work to communicate verbally in front
of an audience at a proficient level.
·
Students will work towards reading, interpreting and
evaluating literature and other written forms a proficient level.
·
Students will understand and participate in writing,
reading, and speaking as a process, doing mental and practice activities at the
beginning, middle and end of the process.

**A copy of
the textbook is available on-line to all students. Students will register in class for this and
will be able to access the book and some homework assignments from home. I will be mailing home information about how
to access this information in a few weeks.

When essays and speeches are scored for your Graduation Portfolio, you have the
option to redo them to improve your scores.
You must revise them within one week if you wish to improve your
grade. You may revise to improve scores
at any time.
• Late Work:
Anything
turned in late is worth 50% credit. You
will receive four certificates that will allow you to turn in four assignments one
day late. If you are absent on the day an assignment is
due, it is your responsibility to turn it in when you return. If you don't, it will be considered late.

Attendance/Tardies:
• Tardies
will be handled as per student handbook.
• Late work
due to absences: Ask for work as soon as
you return to school. Quizzes and
worksheets must be completed within one
week of them being assigned, except in the case of a prolonged absence and
then arrangements must be made.
• Unexcused
absences: You lose the right to make up
work for credit if you have an unexcused absence.
Behavior Expectations:
Be respectful
of others, whether they are in the room or not.
Your behavior, speech, and attitude should allow others to perform their
duties to the best of their ability.

We will
cover the Content Standards at the 10th grade benchmark in reading, literature,
writing, and speaking. For a more

We will
deal with Personal Management, Problem Solving, Communication, Team Work, and
Career Development as described in the Oregon Career-Related Learning
Standards.
Office Hours:
My
preparation period is listed on the master school class schedule. This semester it is 2nd period. I am also available from 7:30-8:00 and from
3:00-3:30. If you cannot find me in the classroom,
please have the office page me.
