Course Overview: Theatre I is an introduction to theatre arts. The course is designed to introduce students to acting and theatre-related skills. Improvisation, concentration, and teamwork will be the focus of the course.

 

Course Goals: In this class, you will strengthen your skills in using your voice, movement, concentration, memorization, and working as a team member.

            Content is often modified to be made more appropriate for high school students.  Contact me for any concerns or special arrangements…the goal is always growth, with respect for parental wishes.

 

Materials to be Provided by Students:

Pencils, Pens, Binders, Paper, Brains (not really a joke).

 

Assessment:

• Grading Scale -- as per student handbook

• Weight of types of assignments:

    Participation 40%             Quizzes, Tests, Written Work 20%           Projects 40%       

 

A. Participation -- You will receive 10 points for each day you are present and active in class. Points will be deducted for: tardies, being unprepared for class, off-task or disruptive behavior, gum on-stage, inappropriate dress/shoes, and non-participation.

 

B. There will be some written work and quizzes over the units we study.

 

C. Projects

            1. Projects will consist of short acting exercises and major Performed Scenes & Monologues.

            2. Projects are to be presented on the date due. If a student/group is not ready to perform on the day their project is due, 20% will be docked from the score and if still unprepared the next day, the student/group receives a zero.

            3. If a group is not ready due to an absence of one or more group members, that group will be allowed to perform the following day. If group members are still absent, substitute performer(s) will be designated to fill the gap.

4. If a group member misses his/her group’s performance due to an excused absence, an alternate project will be assigned to that person to be rehearsed and/or prepared out of class.

 

            Extra Credit -- Will be added to project scores and will only be given for participation in an after school production.

Attendance:

• Tardies and unexcused absences as per student handbook

 

Drama Rules:

1. Show respect for: Teacher, assistants, other students, and personal and school property. (Don’t mess with drama equipment unless you have permission.)

2. Come to class PREPARED to work.

3. When Miss Salge is talking, EVERYONE stops and listens.

4. No gum, candy, food, or drink in auditorium. You’ll lose participation points.

5. Leave self-consciousness and attitudes about peers at the door. Put downs will not be tolerated. We’re here to build each other up -- not tear each other down.

6. Have fun while giving your best effort.
